CST Customer Blogs About His Experience

CST Customer Blogs About His Experience Main Image

We came across one of our customer’s blogs today where he is discussing his CST install from start to finish.

His system isn’t complete yet but we’re excited to follow along through the entire process. Here are his first and second posts if you’d like to join us.

We love it when our customers are as excited about solar as we are.

PNM announces new rate hike

Last week PNM scaled back its rate increase by almost half, from 21% to 10.8%.  The company also announced that they are no longer going to pursue the 8 cent per kilowatt hour “solar access fee” that they had originally asked for from the Public Regulation Commission.

The second part is particularly good news for people interested in solar, as the 8 cents per kilowatt-hour charge would have severely undercut the financial incentives for going solar.

The rate increase will increase average electricity bills in northern and central New Mexico by about $41 annually starting May 15th and an additional $35 per year starting January 1st, 2012.  Of course people who have already bought solar systems and signed agreements with PNM will benefit from the additional avoided costs associated with this rate hike.

In a further attempt to encourage green habits in their customers PNM has not raised their charge on the first 200 kWh a customer uses.  This helps customers who have small usages, or customers whose usage is mostly covered from going solar!

Albuquerque Academy project is complete

Albuquerque Academy project is complete Main Image

If you are interested in viewing a slideshow of the system’s construction click here.  Here is some information about the system taken from an earlier post:

This array is the culmination of a three year long project, it consists of over 5,000 panels and will provide over 2 million kilowatt hours of electricity to the school annually, about 25% of the schools energy use. As a non-profit organization Albuquerque Academy isn’t eligible for many of the renewable energy tax credits. Instead they are acting as a “solar host” for the array, which is actually financed and owned by third parties who are eligible for these credits.

The school provides the land for the array and promises to purchase the low cost energy for 20 years while the other companies put up the $5 million necessary to pay for the system. This mutually beneficial collaboration will result in a dramatic reduction in the school’s energy costs and carbon footprint, all without cutting into the school’s operating budget. What’s even better is that as the price of traditional energy rises the school’s annual savings will increase and after 20 years Albuquerque Academy will assume ownership of the array.

For more information check out Albuquerque Academy’s article on the installation.

Sunpower and NRG Solar Announce development of 250MW California Valley Solar Ranch

Sunpower and NRG Solar Announce development of 250MW California Valley Solar Ranch Main Image

Sunpower and NRG Energy officially announced that they are beginning construction on a 250MW solar installation next year. The facility, named the “California Valley Solar Ranch” should start producing energy by the end of 2011 and will be operating at full capacity by 2013. Check out this article for more information.

We use Sunpower panels in many of our installations, both residential and commercial, because their panels are the highest efficiency and the most light weight available. New Mexico doesn’t have any installations on the same scale as the California Solar Ranch yet but our 3.2 MW installation at the Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center in Albuquerque, NM uses Sunpower panels and will be the largest solar plant in NM when completed.

Consolidated Solar Technologies featured in New Mexico Business Weekly

Consolidated Solar Technologies was featured in two articles in the latest issue of New Mexico Business Weekly. The first article, titled Solar Projects Burn Brightly Around New Mexico, discusses how CST was founded three years ago by Mike Mattioli, Jerry Mosher and Kevin Bassalleck. This article also talks about the fact that last month Consolidated Solar Technologies broke ground on the two largest commercial solar PV projects in the state, the 1.15 megawatt Albuquerque Academy job, which we discuss here, and a 3.2 megawatt solar installation at the Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center in Albuquerque, NM. The system at the VA Medical Center will consist of about 12,000 panels installed on both the rooftop of the location and on new carports built specifically for this purpose. Eaton Corp. is the project contractor and CST is doing the design and installation work.

The second article, Solar Industry Reports Radiant Revenue, is more about the business end of New Mexico solar, it shows CST’s meteoric growth from $2 million in revenue last year to $13 million projected this year. About 60% of this revenue comes from residential sales, with the remaining 40% coming from commercial jobs. Mike Mattioli expects this to flip next year as we continue to pursue commercial projects.

CST to add 440 kW to the Albuquerque International Airport PV System!

CST was recently issued an award letter from the City of Albuquerque for a contract to expand the existing 146.4 kW PV array (also built by CST) at the Albuquerque International Airport. CST was the selected vendor after a thorough and competitive bidding process with the city. The expansion will add another 440 kW of PV arrays to the existing system, bolstering the Sunport’s already impressive commitment to fostering the use of renewable energy at their facilities. We are excited to expand upon the existing array, and look forward to completing this project with cooperation from the talented aviation department staff. Look for this project to be completed in Q4 of 2010.
